*Lori is a 16-year-old student
from the Stanley G. Falk School. She
has faced many life challenges at a time
when most young people are searching
for meaning, for identity. She is at risk of
harming herself.
She has resisted
support even
to the point of
refusing to take
medication aimed
at enhancing her
coping skills. Lori
is now linked to
Child & Family
Services’ “Vendor
Services,” a
support arm of
Wraparound,
Home & Community-Based Services
(HCBS) Waiver, and Bridges to Health
(B2H). Vendor Services offers additional
community-based options for children
and families to traditional counseling,
including respite, mentorship, tutoring,
daily living skill building, career
counseling, and therapeutic recreation
among other services focused on
helping at-risk youth avoid out-of-home
placement and remain in their homes.
Lori’s stint into Vendor Services
led to an interesting discovery; she
wanted to learn to play the ukulele. She
was partnered with a Vendor Service
provider, who just happened to be a Falk
School music teacher and the ukulele
lessons began. Playing the ukulele
allowed her to start building her
self-esteem, and these lessons helped her
to feel pride in this
new accomplishment.
She also developed
healthier coping
skills and began to
communicate her
feelings. Today, she
is able to deal with
her emotions in a
safe manner without
causing harm to herself
or others.
The music
teacher who taught her
the ukulele became another mentor in her
life. “It is great to see that she has a role
model. Now, she has a close connection
with the music teacher, whom she looks
up to as a mentor,” explains Emily Vozzo,
a Vendor Services Team Leader. Lori
has made such significant strides in her
progress and we celebrate her successes.
Vendor Services is one of Child
& Family Services’ newest programs.
Providers assist children with mental
health diagnoses and behavioral issues.
These children are also enrolled in the
Care Coordination or Bridges to Health
programs. Vendor Services links children
and their families with Community
Service Workers (vendors), many of
whom are highly-trained, certified
teachers from the Stanley G. Falk School
and have direct experience working with
children with behavioral and emotional
needs.
