Granting Help, Hope To Families In Need
One moment, or person, can make a lasting impact
leaving a permanent imprint on someone’s life. Dedicated Child &
Family Services’ Board Member, Kristina Young, reflects on stories
from her childhood and her family that helped shape the person,
professional and philanthropist she is today.
Growing up in Buffalo’s East Side with my parents and
brother created years of cherished memories which I hold dear
even today. We were a middle-class family and my father’s
hard-working, generous spirit was the cornerstone of our family’s
value system. As a manager at the Westinghouse Electric
Corporation, he would always extend a helping hand to his
employees in and outside of work. I remember one employee in
particular who lost his eyesight through retinal detachment. My
dad took care of his employee by taking him shopping, driving
him to his medical appointments, and caring for his every need.
Another memory I have of my father is of him helping
out an elderly neighbor, who didn’t own a vehicle. After
working the overnight shift, he would come home and drive the
neighbor’s daughter to Roswell Park for cancer treatments. He
would stay with her for her treatments and return to work in
the afternoon. There wasn’t anything my dad wouldn’t do for
someone in need.
My parents grew up in the Depression Era. They would
often remind me and my brother to be thankful for what we had
because there were many others who had less. They dressed us in
hand-me down clothes from older cousins; my dad never bought
a new car. We learned how to ride on previously-used bikes. The
values they taught us as young children inspired us to become
the adults we are today.
My philosophy of giving back to the community is
something that is an innate part of me. I believe my parents led
their life by such meaningful example that it became ingrained
in me to become connected to the community I cherish and
call home. I am currently, and have been involved in a variety
of different organizations as a tribute to my parents, such as
the Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York and CMH
Counseling. I am also very passionate about the work I do
with Child & Family Services, and have been committed to it
throughout my different roles serving on the Board of Directors.
Kristina Young has served on the Child & Family Services’
Board of Directors for more than 25 years.
